World’s largest travel site has announced the winners of their 2019 Travellers’ Choice Awards.
The top ten travel destinations have been named according to TripAdvisor’s year long survey. Based on the quality and volume of traveller’s reviews and ratings of accommodation, attractions and overall experience.
Desiree Fish, vice president of global communications for TripAdvisor said: “With more than 156,000 destinations listed on TripAdvisor, travellers can find inspiration and advice on where to stay, what to do and where to eat during every type of trip. The Travellers’ Choice awards for Destinations recognise major cities and islands that continue to deliver an outstanding experience and are beloved by our global community of travellers.
“For those who want to cross these popular destinations off their travel bucket list, we recommend visiting during off-peak seasons when you can find great savings and less crowds.”
London has been awarded the number one spot with Paris in second place and Rome taking third. New York took the top destination within the U.S. for the ninth consecutive year yet missed out on the world’s top ten.
“We are delighted to see London top the list of TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards for Destinations,” said Laura Citron, CEO of Visit London. “To have the world’s largest travel site’s community name London as the best-rated destination in the world is a true validation of the incredible hard work of our tourism industry, ensuring our visitors have exceptional experiences every single day of the year.”
Statistics show that the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle created a rise in visitor numbers to the English capital in 2018, as people flocked to see the couple. Several of London’s other royal-based attractions also benefitted from this, with the ‘London Tour with Changing of the Guard and Buckingham Palace Access’ experience seeing a 231% rise.
London is also the home of many parks and gardens and offers an array of city adventure travel.
Visitors to the city can take in spectacular views from the top the O2 stadium after a 1.5 hour climb up the world’s busiest music venue. There are also various walks, runs, city games, fishing spots, picnics and street food areas to discover and explore.
Other destinations to be in the world’s top ten are Crete, Bali, Phuket, Barcelona, Istanbul, Marrakech and Dubai.
With millions of travellers visiting these destinations each year it is recommended to explore beyond the well-known attractions to experience the authentic culture, landscape, cuisine and people each place has to offer.
