Study Confirms That Travelling Improves Mental Health

Taking holidays, travelling and partaking in wellbeing activities all have a positive effect on a person’s mental health, confirms a study by Travelzoo.

More than 10,700 Travelzoo members responded to a health and wellness survey in April 2019. The participants were from the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Australia, USA, Canada, China and Hong Kong.

83% of the people said that a holiday has a positive effect on their mental health, which is said to be crucial to enjoying life. This boost also helps the respondents to feel more relaxed and bring out the best in themselves. 92% believe that mental wellbeing is as important, if not more, as physical health.

People are becoming more interested in travelling for wellbeing as mental health is considered vital for enjoying life.

With mental health issues on the rise due to an increase in stressful careers and busy lifestyles, wellbeing travel is a sought-after sector of the leisure and travel industry. However, many people still consider a wellness break, which can include any activities that increase mental or physical health such as outdoor sports, yoga retreats or spas, to be luxurious and expensive.

Nearly 70% of those surveyed confirmed that they are considering a wellness break during 2019 although many are still at the research and planning stages.

“Mental health is an integral part of health; indeed, there is no health without mental health.”

World Health Organization (WHO)

64% of Germany’s respondents have previously taken a wellness break with 72% of them confirming that they feel less stressed than last year, this was the highest score form the countries surveyed. The lowest scores came from the U.S. with just 10% of Americans surveyed saying they have taken a wellness break. 74% of the Americans also said they feel more stressed than last year.
