Sweden: Stockholm in January

With cheap flights and good value accommodation, the Swedish capital of Stockholm is the perfect choice for a January getaway.

For those not looking for the winter sun, the white snow and blue skies of Sweden in January can be more enjoyable than miserable. The bright skies, Swedish hospitality and picturesque cobbled streets of the old town are more than capable of taking away the winter blues.

Walking around the city, over some of the 50 bridges that connect the 14 islands together, or strolling through some of the tranquil parks, you will get a good feel for life in this Scandinavian city.

There are a few places that can be worked into a visit of any length and should not to be missed.

The old town of Gamla Stan is the home of the King’s Royal Palace and in front of there you can see the changing the guards.  Definitely worth watching.

The museum quarter is over on Djurgarden.  Amongst others, you will find the Skansen Swedish Open Air Museum, which is also the home of the Nordic animals in the zoo and the Abba museum.

Stockholm was the home to the world’s first ice bar.  Dressed a little like an Eskimo you will be taken for the most refreshing, ice cold cocktail out of an ice glass whilst sitting on an ice chair at an ice table.  You get the idea, everything is made of ice!  The experience can now be extended to making your very own ice sculpture too.

The city is not short of accommodation.

Beds in a hostel dormitory can be found for less than £10 per person. Hotels are dotted around the city, a little further out there are campsites with bungalows. But also, guests to Stockholm can stay on one of the boats lined up alongside the water’s edge, with cabin prices starting at less than £40 per night.
